The flag of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was adopted on December 2, 1971, when the country was formed. It consists of three equal horizontal stripes in green, white, and black colors. The green color represents fertility, the white color symbolizes neutrality, and the black color denotes the oil reserves of the country. In the center of the flag, there is a vertical red rectangle that represents unity, and it extends to about three-quarters of the length of the flag. The red rectangle has a white serrated stripe on the hoist side that represents the seven emirates that came together to form the UAE. The emblem of the UAE appears in white color at the center of the red bar. It contains the eagle of Saladin, which represents the Arab unity, and a golden color scroll that contains the name of the country in Arabic calligraphy. The flag has a proportion of 1:2, and it is commonly used in official and public settings in all seven emirates of the country.
